Relay for Life

Thanks to everyone who came out to Relay last night and helped us pedal through the night (and the rain). We did a great job raising awareness for both our club and the fight against cancer by raising almost $2,000. I thought I'd share some of the pictures I took with everyone. If anyone wants them in a larger version just email me and I'll send them to you.

Also- good job to Garrett for learning how to use the rollers and Eric for attempting to eat cake while on rollers and whatever other nonsense he managed to do on them.

Case Cycling 3rd in Division II, Horomanski a double winner in Michigan

The Case Western Reserve University Cycling Club finished their season with a successful weekend racingthrough Michigan. The team stopped for their first race on Saturday, April 9 at East Lansing. The Spartans were led by senior Audra Horomanski, who took first place in the women's road race B category. Horomanski held off Grand Valley State University's Chelsea Clark in the final sprint as race officials had to go to a video frame-by-frame finish.

Horomanski maintained her momentum throughout the weekend, placing second in the time trial at Michigan State before traveling to Clarkson, Mich. for the University of Michigan criterium. Horomanski took first place at the Waterford Hills racetrack, a fast, winding track. The race consisted of 30 minutes and two laps of the course. Points were awarded during prime laps throughout the race depending who passed the finish line first. Horomanski took three of the four prime laps to take first in the event.

The team improved to third in the conference of Division II schools. Kevin Steiner took seventh in the road race in East Lansing by sticking with the lead pack. Joining Steiner in the C category were Matt Demarest and Ryan Pierce, who followed closely behind the pack.

"After a successful weekend and numerous top-ten finishes, we're now ranked in the division, the conference is separated into D1 and D2, based on size, and 13th overall out of 45. Impressively, this was after attending only three of the conference's six race weekends," said Pierce.

The Spartans then competed in the individual time trial on a seven-mile course. Demarest and Steiner had impressive races, finishing one second apart and placing ninth and tenth respectively.

In the criterium, Steiner and Pierce both managed to stick with the pack after being unable to chase down a breakaway group.

"The next race in the conference is regionals at Lindenwood, Missouri. The Michigan State/University of Michigan Race weekend will mark the final races the CWRU Cycling Team will be attending." Pierce said "Unfortunately Missouri is just too far away, and travel and lodging is too expensive for the team to attend this year. We certainly hope that next year's club will be able to attend more races and continue to build on a great season."

Case Cycling Club in the Observer!

In case you missed it....

http://media.www.cwruobserver.com/media/storage/paper1370/news/2011/04/01/Sports/Case-Cylcling.Has.Strong.Showing.At.Notre.Dame-3989935.shtml

"The Case Western Reserve University Cycling Club returned from races at Notre Dame University with the swagger of a team in the midst of a resurgence. After the squad placed riders 5th and 9th out of a field of 50 in the men's D road race at Ohio State University on March 5-6, the men one-upped themselves by returning to campus with a win. Matthew Demarest, Ryan Pierce, Kevin Steiner, and Eric Young placed first in the men's C team time trial. The quartet beat cycling powerhouse Lindsey Wilson College by 20 seconds over a 10 mile-course.

The club also brought two of its women riders to Notre Dame. Audra Horomanski competed in the C division and earned an eighth place finish in the Road Race and finished fourth in the criterium. Corinne Burr finished 11th in the criterium and 15th in the road race.

The criterium, a short, closed-course race on city streets, was a strength for sophomore Young who earned seventh in the C division. Young chased down a Lindsey Wilson rider who was breaking away from the pack, and managed to pull them back, allowing himself a top finish in the event.

Sophomore Evan Maynard and freshman Eric Silverman kept together in the criterium. The duo finished 20th and 23rd, respectively, in the D division.

Pierce, a senior and the club's vice president of road and race, was excited about the team's performance. "We were aggressive in each race," he said, "working to keep teams from forming a break and moving away from the peloton. Given that we're beating teams from big schools such as Purdue, Notre Dame, University of Wisconsin (currently No. 4 in our conference),and Lindsey Wilson, we're really making a reputation for ourselves."

The Spartans are currently 16th in the Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference (MWCCC), a feat considering the team only competed in half of the events. The MWCCC has 36 teams that stretch from Ohio and Kentucky to Wisconsin and Illinois.

The cycling club is now preparing for a race at the University of Michigan on April 8-9.

"We train mostly by putting in time on the road," said Pierce. "On recovery days, we'll go out for a light 20 miles averaging about 16mph, usually out from campus toward Gates Mills. On harder days we'll go between 40 and 50 miles. Hard training sessions often include hill intervals, and we'll also have periodic sprint points throughout the ride where we'll race each other to a signpost or other landmark."

More information about the Case Cycling Club can be found online at their website: http://filer.case.edu/org/cycling/. The club is actively recruiting new riders for both the racing team and the general riding club."

ND Race Report (part one!)

Just a quick update! I don't want to write too much... and I still want to hear back from some of the other guys to get a feel for how the races worked out for them... but I thought you'd like to hear how the race went!

How does 4th in the Women's crit sound? Or how about a strong top-10 finish in the women's C race? A group of Men's Ds that all finished strong (out of 70 riders, no less!)

How about first place in the Team Time Trial for the Men's Cs?

...Not bad for a race weekend, I'd say!

More to come.
